Shock-induced transformation of nitinol shape memory alloy: Effect of stress state on transformation

Due to its numerous practical applications and intriguing phase transformation behavior, shape memory alloys (SMAs) have garnered significant research development interests. In the past, most studies on mechanical behavior of SMAs been conducted under uniaxial stress loadings. Limited shock loading has not provided conclusive results regarding their such loading. Additionally, there is a lack comprehensive understanding effects different states behavior. The main objectives this study are address these issues. To achieve objectives, series wave experiments were designed conducted. quasi-static dynamic carried out establish baseline for comparison. revealed that strain was approximately 1.92 GPa in contrast 0.5 (quasi-static) 0.8 (dynamic) observed exhibited noticeable rate sensitivity both types There appeared be critical above which austenite driven metastable state. This estimated axial along direction 2 × 103/s–4 103/s 106/s apparent high can likely attributed combination high-pressure confinement rate. However, determining relative contributions remains an open issue.
